The Taste of Stowe Arts Festival is an unusual event combining a market for handmade crafts, original art, music, and an array of gourmet edible treats. A colossal 100 foot wide tent houses the artists and artisans and other smaller tents host the culinary components.

The Art and Craft Tent is a veritable cathedral of creativity. Come on out and see the extraordinary items our artists have for you: birdbaths and marble patio tables; end tables, pitchers, mugs, plates galore; hand painted clothing; furniture; sparkling jewelry; leather purses and bags; photography; original paintings; leather work; wall sculptures; exotic dark chocolates; wall art with clever cartoons poking fun at us all; handmade dog treats; and more. You get to stroll into 150 boutiques and meet the actual artists; that’s right you meet the maker of the works presented! This zany and talented bunch of artists and artisans have led interesting lives. Hear their stories, buy a piece of their work and take a bit of the artist’s personality with you. Visit the show and makeover your home, your office, your garden, your patio. Buy a new piece of jewelry to celebrate Vermont summertime when the world is wonderful.

While you are shopping, step over to the Epicurean Circus. On Friday there will be a celebrity chef cooking contest. Each participant receives mystery ingredients and then has an hour to concoct a delicious dish. Also, Friday is “Localvore Lunch Day.” Several area farms prepare a wide range of menu selections using locally grown ingredients. Lamb kabobs, hamburgers and cheese burgers, quiche, grilled cheese sandwiches, and organic wood oven pizzas are just some of the delicious food available.

Saturday will serve up Vermont BBQ with local eateries staking their claim to the “best damn BBQ house” in Vermont. Vermont very well may be as reputed for craft beer as it is for craft of the art-variety. Several breweries will be represented at Taste of Stowe, including Rock Art, Otter Creek, and Magic Hat. While sipping some cool suds and smacking your lips over a spicy rib, kick back and enjoy the Starline Rhythm Boys belt out a few rock-a-billy tunes.

Sunday brings the local cognoscenti out in droves for the actual Taste of Stowe, which begins at 11:30. More than a dozen chefs set up in the dining tent to serve two to three of their specialties. This is very popular and usually the food runs out before 3PM. As the chefs try to outdo one another, the public is the real winner here.

While the food component is spectacular, the Festival essentially is an artist market. Either before or after drinking, remember that the Localvore Movement is all about supporting locally grown as well as locally made goods. Buying from individuals is important. It keeps the money in circulation locally. Besides you get to know an artist, collecting a friend as well as a piece of work.
