Once the calendar turns past Thanksgiving, suddenly winter is on the doorstep and we begin to focus on celebrating the holidays. In every culture in the Northern hemisphere the solstice and the shorter days brings about the need for light. Whether pagan or religious, let the light loose is the primeval cry inside our souls.
Recognizing this Craftproducers has added two holiday marketplaces for handmade goods, one in Syracuse, NY and the other in Albany. Obviously, this is the time of year when we prepare for Chanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Ramadan or just secular pleasure in enjoying the “season to be jolly.”
Gifts and a spirit of generosity are a huge part of the Holiday time. Obviously it’s not the amount of money spent on gifts. Certainly ostentation borders on boorishness. That’s the beauty of buying handmade. The gift giver has thoughtfully considered the recipient and makes a choice of an object designed and crafted inside a studio. Besides the actual object, there’s the story of the artist/maker. It is not merely a coffee cup; it’s the coffee cup made by the potter from Clinton, NY. It’s his whole life story coming from England where he was trained by a famous British ceramicist and gradually wound up in a huge barn on Main Street in Clinton. These coffee mugs take on a larger than life aura. At the Syracuse Holiday Crafts Spectacular, 125 artists will showcase not only their work but also share a little bit of their lives. Buying their products and giving them as gifts is a win/win for all concerned, especially supporting sustainable made handcrafted goods.
While this list is by no means a total list of work for sale at the show, it includes a wide range of jewelry: rings , necklaces, bracelets, and hair accessories, all available in many price levels; useful pottery for the household including kitchenware, lamps, planters, and ceramic tiles; prints, photography, and original paintings for your empty walls; clothing of all sorts to adorn your body and warm your soul; metal ware including fireplace utensils and garden sculpture; leather purses and bags for the fashion conscious; specialty foods like jams, jellies, chutneys, and hot sauces for stocking stuffers; seriously dark chocolate for passionate chocolate fans; and, the list goes on.
Habitat for Humanity has a presence on the show. They will stage their Annual Gingerbread House Contest. Last year’s contest drew 20 entrants and was considered a successful fundraiser for them. Look for an even more exciting contest this year.
